The research of the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy at the 42nd SIF Congress in Sorrento

The 42nd National Congress of the Italian Society of Pharmacology took place in Sorrento (NA) from 13 to 16 November, with significant participation from the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy, with the presentation of some works that animate its research on plants and plant extracts active in the field of gastrointestinal and skin inflammation. Prof. Mario Dell’Agli, head of the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy, moderated the symposium “Pharmacological properties of Mediterranean plant extracts”, in which Dr. Stefano Piazza presented the results of research on the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of Cistus incanus, a plant typical of the Mediterranean basin, in Helicobacter pylori infection, with the report entitled “Exploring the effect of Cistus x incanus L. extract during H. pylori infection”.

Dr. Carola Pozzoli in her oral communication “Valorisation of C. sativa by-products at intestinal level: a sustainable approach” presented the work on the phytochemical characterization and on the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities at intestinal level of chestnut extracts and its by-products.

Chestnut and its ellagitannins are once again the protagonists – but in the gastric field and in particular in H. pylori infection – of the oral communication by Dr. Giulia Martinelli “Ellagitannins from Castanea sativa Mill. leaves with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities in in vitro and in vivo models of H. pylori gastric infection”.

Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity of strawberry ellagitannins, in the poster presented by Dr. Nicole Maranta “In vitro investigation of the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activity of ellagitannins from strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) against H. pylori infection.

Dr. Elisa Sonzogni’s poster “The potential role of the dietary compound glucoraphanin and its metabolite sulforaphane in the framework of celiac disease” illustrated the biological role of glucoraphanin and sulforaphane in the context of celiac disease.

Finally, the minor cannabinoids synthesized by Cannabis sativa and their anti-inflammatory activity at the skin level were the subject of the poster presented by Dr. Marco Fumagalli, entitled “Chemical synthesis and biological activity of minor cannabinoids in an in vitro model of skin inflammation”.
